Anyone familiar with Shoegazer and Darkwave know the staple of the sound. A wall of lush reverb.

I have sought to achieve this landscape like effect, but can't seem to get it just right?

Any suggestions on piecing together a great deal of reverb. I know the rules that reverb should be last in chain, but how much is too much?

What are some tricks used to create that magnificent tone?

Often I've found that when dealing with reverb, even the most skilled engineer can't turn lead into gold. Great sounding reverb come from great outboard gear or software. Go to your local music shop and listen to the difference between a DOD reverb pedal & a Lexicon PCM 91 There is no comparison. You definitely get what you pay for in this aspect of sound design and engineering.

Here are some great articles about or written by David Griesinger of Lexicon. Though their scope is rather academic and geared towards high end studio production, I'm certain they'll offer quite a bit of insight to developing your sound.

Here is a very intuitive and comprehensive list of resources on spatial effects and acoustics.

Hope this helps you in your attempt to perfect your sound.

Try running your reverb outs through a chorous effect , this gives movement in the reverb and creates a lush feeling.
