Just take the time to sit back and learn it. I rap and decided to start making beats cause I got tired of doing beat jacks and no one in my town could make anything that could go past the local house party. I had a music back ground and applied that to my beats. I learned about different chords and drum patterns. I can even make a tight baseline now lol.
The biggest learning curve will be the DAW (Fruity loops, logic etc.). It's one thing to play a trumpet or a piano. It's a whole different thing to make it sound good when it's coming out of the computer. This part will take time to learn because it is a new skill but trying to learn it now will make it a lot more easier in the future. If you are eager I would say jump straight to learning how to sample and as Music theory questions pop up the head to google.
