What is the safest way to unplug/plug xlrs into an interface no risks of shorting?

if you have an active di or condensor mic make sure that
1) phantom power is turned off when you plug in the cable to the interface/item of equipment
2) phantom power is turned off before you unplug the cable from the interface/item of equipment
