Whatever the CEO needs them to do. It's really hard to answer more specifically. But when the 'business' of running a business gets to be more than one person can manage and still grow, additional people are hired. So the president and VP help him, sometimes with very specific skill sets like marketing or finance or sales, or sometimes as a surrogate for the CEO in his absence, so the president or VP may run the day to day operations while the CEO meets with important clients personally.

The size of the company also matters - a 5 person music label has a CEO just as a 1000 person, and they require somewhat different skill sets and support staff.

    Does that help at all?
