    You guys sure?! Maybe it is true. But I've always based my melodies on bottom note...

    There's no right or wrong way. I was referring to the process of harmonizing a melody. Not building one from a harmonic progression.

    Could you go into a bit more detail, like what do you mean by adding 9ths and 11ths?

    Adding the 2nd & 4th degree of the scale. If you formed a Cmaj9 or Cmaj11 those notes would be in the next octave. Although you can voice them various ways.

    Cmaj9
    C - E - G - B - D
    A polychord. The I & V chords of the Cmaj scale. Play one chord in one hand & the other in the other. You can invert both & come up with various voicings.

    Cmaj11
    C - E - G - B - D - F
    Same as the Cmaj9 but with an added 11th, or 4th degree of the scale.

    2=9
    4=11
    6=13

    Your second chord is a C in the left hand and a G7 in the right hand

    If the seventh is present we name them 9 and 11.

    If the 7th is absent we might resort to naming them as

    Cadd 9 (add2 ) C-E-G-D
    and
    Cadd 4 (add 11).C-E-G-F

    If the 3rd were absent we would name them as

    Csus2 C-D-G

    and

    Csus4 C-F-G

    These last two formats are ambiguous as they could also be named as

    C-D-G D7Sus4 (no 5th) Gsus4
    C-F-G Fsus2 G7Sus4 (no 5th)
