Learning guitar & virtual guitar amps question

Hope this is the right pace to ask about this but I didn't know where else to put it:

I am starting to make a little bit of progress on learning to play the piano, and I am thinking about learning guitar as well now.
When I was browsing lists of "the best free plugin vst's" I stumbled upon a couple of guitar amps. Apparently native instruments guitar rig has a free version, and I found a couple others as well.

If you use one of these virtual amps, do you still need a real amp to play electric guitar? Or is it better to learn on an acoustic guitar?

    Thanks

Electric vs acoustic: The real question is what do you propose to play when all is done and dusted? Answer to that is the answer to your conundrum.
real vs simulated amplifier: do you intend to play live or only to play to record? If you see yourself performing then get a real amplifier and learn how to mic it up properly. If you see yourself only recording at home and have noise issues with neighbours already, then getting a simulator and a decent audio interface is a better bet.

Learning to play takes time, dedication and practice; be in it for the long term results not the short term gains

Thanks bandcoach! I have no intention to play live. Only recording in the studio and because I've always wanted to play piano & guitar, but never got to it as a kid... Damn video games were a freaking waste of time

I've geen going over a couple of vids on guitar rig and similar things today and what struck me is that I never heard the guitar sound I am after for possible use in productions later on.
The sound I'm going for is very summer-ish like Poolside or Goldroom:

Can be done in Guitar Rig, simply a matter of programming the effects loop you want.

If you are looking at playing with Guitar rig as your amp sim then I do suggest that you get the guitar Rig Controller as well, makes life a whole lot easier.....

I just used the Waves "CLA Guitars" (Chris Lord-Algea's guitar cab) plugin on a track I engineered not too long ago... sounded great.

Amplitube is also a good plugin.

The question of acoustic guitar vs electric will also depend on what style of playing you have in mind? Do you see yourself rocking out on a track a la lil wayne prom queen or doing stuff like the Thugz mansion acoustic picking, I play both but mainly the latter and it definitely opens up new avenues in your production. Plus, if you produce professionally its one less musician that needs a cut from your placements.
