How to Produce instead of just making beats

I've been producing for a while now. Trying to figure out how to make hip hop/pop instrumentals that are easy for a songwriter to write to?

I know to put less in a track and to try and space out the drums, but was wondering if anyone knew any other tricks to making an instrumental easier to write? Also, how to make an instrumental more compelling to write to for a songwriter?
 
I believe that a song, particularly in hip-hop or pop, should have a strong melody or something you can hum to. As for whether you should create the melody or the beat first, it's really up for you to discover, as I've had success both ways.
