Soooo! I was reading a thread about taking an audio engineering course and how it opened the persons eyes. This thread sparked a few questions in my noodle. and here they are!A. In what ways has a audio/engineering course improved you?! B. Is there any other courses out there in music that improved you as well? C. Would you recommend taking the course to another producer? D. Did the course step up your game in "PRODUCTION"?E. Are you satisfied with the course?F. What are some courses that would benefit a "FUTURE PRODUCER"?Alright, I'm done that's all of them. I'm thinking of taking a course myself so I am pretty curious about this. I also heard there is a degree in composition you can get too. Maybe that would be the way to go... Opinions?

Go for the composition degree - try UWS or SU if you can get in - it is definitely worth the time and effort - I have one from a predecessor of SCU in Lismore, where I also worked in the Studios originally running them......

Which part of Sydney you in???

Well, initially your location showed as Sydney, you seem to have just changed it to Australia.

I'm down Liverpool way, just a little bit to the west.

Use to play against Bass Hill in Rugby League as a kid, so know the area a little, grew up in Riverwood.

As for the degree - yep finished it a long time ago now and then did one in Software Engineering and added some other bits including a teaching qualification.

Definitely worth doing as it opens up different ways of thinking about what you and how you write as well as giving you studio time if they have one.

Dam and you did a software engineering degree too? I was thinking of do that degree when I got back home. It was between that and pursuing music to the fullest. So with the composition degree they teach you everything you need to know about making a awesome piece of music from the basic music theory to the psychological side of composition? I gotta probably master an instrument though before I start that up I'm sure... Hmm Piano seems to be the easiest and most practical for me. And how was it doing the software degree can you write your own programs now for DAW's?

Software degree is just like doing composition; both are about writing instructions for things to execute - a computer or an ensemble of some sort - so it is ying and yang stuff that sits together nicely.

My initial interest in doing SE was to write my own DAW, but then I got a commission to orchestrate and arrange a musical, so plans were put on hold. Now, I'm not sure that I have anything to offer as so much has happened since I finished in the mid-90's - still looking at doing small projects in DSP and notation display.

Thats exactly what I was thinking of doing! Well I would work my way up from the making a good VST to making a DAW of course but I'd get there. I'm torn between the three courses of Audio Engineer, Software Engineer, Composer Engineer ;p Doing the Software though is a sure fire way of making income, Composing would be a little tougher unless I sell my music, Audio Engineer would get me a job, mind you not a very well paying one that is but that also would tie into producing music.

Yeah, maybe, but the two I mentioned are high reputation, high stakes players - they don't allow themselves to make simple mistakes like some of the stuff we keep reading about, nor does our federal government, which regulates the higher education industry in Australia....
