if i'm sampling, then about 2.5 hours, probably 30 mins of that EQing, editing, fading, getting rid of pops and clicks, etc.
if i'm just composing without sampling, shit... like 40 minutes.
mixing takes me forever, especially after vocals. i second guess myself all the time and am a stickler for detail and i adjust shit after just about every listen.
So do you think it's normal for somebody to take 3-4 hours to finish a beat?
There's alota factors involved. Half these niggas don't know how to utilize their DAW, or equipment, so they spend half their time takin the 'long way'. I threw one together yesterday in about 2 hours rough, then uh hour later mixin. Sent it to one of my artists for free since I'm uppin my price. It all depends on your workflow rly. If you hear a sound in your head but don't know how to create it or where to find it in your million presets.
I have preset lust right now for sylenth1
15 minutes to 4 hours to make the beat and finish putting it together. 5 to 30 minutes mixing. it all depends but on average it takes me probly 30 minutes to an hour and a half to finish the beat and 10-20 minutes mixing.
time is an illusion, production time doubly so - ever ask a computer tech how long it will take to fix something? they will give you a figure and when it comes down to it they invariably take 3 times as long.
I have one piece of music I've been working on for nearly thirty years now (this is not uncommon for those who compose serious art music when not working their day job). Others I can finish in about 10 minutes.
Production start to end is a process that gets quicker with practice, but if the music isn't flowing then it can take like forever.
Having tricks like structures, variation techniques for melody and harmonic progressions as well as a solid grasp of how to play an instrument can make these tough situations easier and quicker - but that means that you have to study and practice and experiment, not something most young producers want to do.....
BC: I've been making music since Before Computers were common in music

It depends for me — it takes me longer now, because I know more techniques and these take longer time to do. So I used to be faster before I knew these. But when I get used to them and know more tricks, I’ll probably be faster again.
Some years ago I have once done a full track in 3 hours. I thought that was really very fast! A friend of me played it later the same day in a club! Now I’m working on a track on which I’ve been working for maybe two months now. Strangely, I still don’t get annoyed by the melody. Usually I would stop after a time because I get so annoyed if I listen to the track too often.
It takes me so long right now for this track because I’m trying to set up some cool things which are quite complicated to do. At the same time I’m trying to get a very good mix, but also loud volume. The track itself is basically already finished.
But usually the mixing stage doesn’t take me so much time — usually I would mix the track while producing it. My tracks have lots of automation and even with a gain plugin it’s annoying to mess with the volume faders. Every time I create a new sound in the track, I would make it sound „perfect“ right away (Equalizing, compressing, reverb, etc.). I don’t do this in separate stages.
If needed (like now), I would spend more time on it later too, when the track is basically already done.
