What I do is just run a basic piano, nothing special (I use FL Keys sometimes), through a ton of filters.

Izotope Vinyl > MDA Degrade > Amplitube > PSP Warmer

-I use Vinyl (free) to add some dust and wear to the sound.

-I use MDA Degrade (free) to degrade the quality a little bit.

-I use Amplitube to give some amp-type distortion and add reverb and delay.

-Then I use PSP Warmer to fatten it up. I'm in love with this plugin.

The result sounds something like this... http://www.mardigrasokc.com/altimit/...ro_-_Piano.mp3 (still needs some work, but hopefully you get the basic idea)
There are probably freeware plugins that could replace what I use so don't worry if you don't own all those.

I am with you on this.

I use a piano I like first. The a band pass filter on it and find that sweet spot...Instant grime...add very lightdistortion, some tube emulation...and maybe a lo-fi effect if it isn't grimey enough already.

And I am aldo with ya on the reverb...but not too much there either like with the distortion.

Define "Grimey" becuase you probaly have a preset idea of what grimey sounds in your head, but to us that might not be grimey or might be something diffrent.
