    Hi everyone - this is my first post on the forum!

    I've registered to seek help and discuss topics with others (as what forums are for lol) and learn more about the music industry - to see things I wouldnt see by reading other users opinions and perspectives on subjects.

    I am studying Music Production and Sound Engineering, I am into 'House' music - lots of sub-genres of House and live in England.

    I am trying to set myself up a home studio - so anyone with any pointers, i'd be grateful if you could PM me!

    Also, it would be cool if people could share their current studio set up, for comparrison and general interest!

    Look forward to speaking with a lot of you guys,

    Lewis

    Welcome to FP!

    There's a big "studio pics" thread here.

    As for pointers...well, that's a bit tricky on a generic level but let's just say that it's a good idea to do a lot of reading and asking before buying stuff. A lot of people end up buying stuff they think they need without really understanding what they actually need. A large part of this forum is more or less of an answer to the question though, so read around, use the search and ask away.

    Great video about building your home studio: link

    What you need:
    - Computer
    - DAW
    (probably some headphones)

    What you might want over time:
    - Monitors
    - Audio interface
    - Midi Keyboard

    Optional:
    - Microphone
    - Something like Maschine or akai MPC/MPD
    - Extra VST's or analog synths
    - Acoustic treatment (some will say this isn't optional)
    - ......

    Just remember that you don't need all of this from day 1! What you need is a computer and a DAW. Get to learn your DAW inside out, then (if you think that you need to) you can buy additional stuff.

    What I use:
    computer = macbook pro
    DAW = Ableton
    midi keyboard = Arturia the laboratory 61
    monitors = KRK rp6 g2
    Audio Interface = Akai EIE pro (I don't like this one.. looking to replace it)
    Mic = MXL 990
    I have one extra synth: the Korg Microkorg

    THIS.

    Read and do research, trust me - it might seem boring or what not, but along those hours of reading you will gain knowledge which are needed, and also you'll to get some understanding of what you're actually buying, and perhaps most importantly WHY you are buying it.

    Good luck, and dont have a rush buying things.

    Hi guys,
    Thanks for the welcome Krushing - I will take in what you've said and check out the thread and video once I'm home dude!

    Also, thanks for the insight Goute. Although I think I have come to grasps of using the DAW I intend on using (Logic) from my lectures. I understand I won't new everything at once, but since I'm already learning integrating MIDI controllers etc. when producing. I would like to mirror the studio available where I'm studying at home, so I can take what I have learnt and put it into practice there?

    I think I would be best with a similar studio but on a smaller scale. Probably after I buy my MacBook, I'll consider buying a Keyboard MIDI Controller, an audio interface and a decent set of active monitor speakers.

    You guys think I'll find these for £500 - while trying to avoid latency and poor quality sounds when producing?

    Long winded reply but questions I'd appreciate being answered - thanks guys

    Thanks for the input RV, I'll definitely be reading up on stuff but I'm not as stupid as to rush into buying equipment I don't need, hence the thread lol!

    When I'm home I'm going to have a good browse through.. Expect to see a lot of questions...

    Monitors are worth saving up for a while. That's one of the things where you truly pay for quality.

    Thanks Angello, but since I've been DJing for a few years now - somewhat professional, I think I'll be fine with my HDJ-1000's will be sufficient lol!
