Has anyone tried the cutting up vocal effect technique. I think Three six mafia use it on 'stay fly'. My friend said all you have to do is cut the recorded vocal in segments. I haven't tried it yet but just wondering has anyone tried it and what did they do to get the effect and how did it sound.

Its a cut and paste game. You need to cut up the sample and play with it. You can add effects on different parts of the chopped result. Try playing with it be creative.

Manual cut'n'paste is always nice if you do it right since there's no short cuts to distract you. You might also want to try something like LiveSlice or Traks...

all the three6 effect is is the vocal chopped up with a flanger effect
"Now I been both pardoned and spit on
    Laughed at and hit on
You never had a clue that you were ****ing with a time bomb
Now people see me on the streets and wanna talk
But when I lived right down the block though it was never worth the walk
And I ain't gotta talk, all I had to do was sit and listen
Home in the dark while you hope that I diminish
And when I finish the judge will give me 20 years flat
Cause I went up in the studio and murdered the track"-the monoxide child

You can also get that sound by finding the sample on wax and cutting it up with a transformer scratch.

Be creative: use a gate on the vocals and key trigger it with a hihat pattern. tThis gives you more control and you can be in complete charge in how you want the vocals chopped.
