balancing watching tutorials and making your own beat

someone once told me that i should stop watching tutorials and instead make my own beat, because in the end i have to have something to express.
that rang very true to me, and i've kept my tutorials to the most minimum.
but now i realize that i need to learn some way.

how can i balance watching tutorials and making my own stuff.

should i put a limit like one tutorial per week / 3 days etc?

also, should i watch tutorials in the first place?
is it better to learn from actual music?

3 possibilities:
watch tutorial while looking at your daw to imitate functions.
make beats first then look later.
spend 2 weeks away from making beats and studying your daw's functions inside out.

The way I do it is I only spend time watching tutorials only when I have a question on something or I'm drawing a blank creatively. You can spend hours on end watching tutorials but that doesn't make you a better musician. Making music does! Good luck
