DJing is the act of playing and performing music for a concert/venue while using instruments to create different sound with effect. It requires mixing, effects, rhythm, audio engineering, and sometimes MPC's (some MPC users are considered to be 'DJ's' all though the term means Disc Jockey). The role of the DJ is to deliver the music in the best way possible and the coolest way possible. It is also sometimes the DJ's role to be the Host of the party/venue. Hope that helped a little, if you want specific's just search up the term Disc Jockey.

beat matching and juggling, effects processing, sampling and sequencing, scratching etc.

Turntablist performs by touching and moving the records, stylus and mixer to manipulate sound produces sounds which are unique and not reproduced—the record player becomes a musical instrument. good club DJ's can also incorporate turntablism.

Remixing is definitely an art perfected by DJ's today a lot of remixes are done via DAWs but a good DJ can remix on the fly live with DJ equipment,
^Best reply by far. The term DJ is used pretty loosely, so it's better to separate the different types. A lot of "DJs" these days aren't really DJs at all, the word has just kind of stuck from the days that they were all DJs, lol. Most radio/mobile DJs and remixers these days aren't DJs in any sense of the word.

And I guess they make some of the beats, but they're not really DJs afaik.

Why the hell are they called DJ then -.- confusing me

I think its kinda hard to explain exactly what a DJ does because theres so many types, let me ask another question

Why are DJ Tiesto and Armin Van Buuren considered as the best DJs? Is it because they can ''read'' the crowd and play right music LIVE? Is it HOW they play their music live? Is it because of their official OWN songs? Is it their remixes of songs?

Also some DJs get paid ALOT like DJ Tiesto ... like ridiculously much, is it ONLY because his famous? or because of his real DJ skills?

Anyone can call themselves a DJ, this is the current problem for most of us DJ's as of today. Here's some things you can go by in your mind to know whether they are real DJ's or not.

    1. Is he spinning? Does he have an actual turntable or does he just call himself a DJ and plug his iPod in? DJing means Disc Jockey, if they don't have a vinyl turntable or a software controller, they aren't DJ's.

    2. Is he connecting with the crowd? A DJ doesn't just play music and stare at his laptop. He talks to the crowd, gives shout outs, connects with everyone. Sometime's afterward a really good DJ will talk with his audience, see if they enjoyed what they heard and the performance.

    3. Is he confident in his music and his DJing skill level? This is a big one. A true DJ isn't afraid to play his own music at all, or anyone else's. Most DJ's do re-frame from playing other genres unrelated to what they're doing, but that's natural.

That's basically it, if you ever see a DJ again just ask yourself those 3 questions and you'll know.

I'm not sure because I'm not in that scene at all, but I think Tiesto at least used to be a really good DJ, and a lot of his fame is also because of his production and stuff. Most of the highest paid DJs are paid because of their production, not their DJing skills. But yea, I'm not sure if Tiesto is a great DJ anymore or not, but I think he at least was decent at one time, and his fame is probably mostly due to his production (I could be wrong because I don't know much about the scene or Tiesto's career but this is kind of what I've gathered... it's kind of like Fatboy Slim was/is making heaps from DJing but it's basically his production that people are paying for).
