I was told not to spend more than $175 on a technics 1200 by a guy who knew a lot about this kinda stuff. But after watching ebay auctions for a few days, that kind of seems to be fairy tale. Anybody else have experience with this?

$175???!!! Good luck with that. The only 1200's I've seen on eBay costing less than $175 were all beat the fk up and/or rusted all to hell.
The going price I've seen is about $350 for a good looking Technics 1200/1210.

If you are DJing, Technics 1200/1210's are the ones to get. If you are just sampling, you can save a little money and purchase another brand of turntable.
After you get your tutrtable, the most important item you really need to purchase, and not go cheap on, is a good cartridge/needle combo.

I can second that, Technics is the way to go. $175, yeah you’ll probably only find some garbage for that money.

And I also agree on the cartridge/needle thing — very important! Make sure to get the right needle if you’re scratching or just playing, or it could harm your Vinyls. That would not be cool if you have some rare stuff!

175 is pretty optimistic for a good deck. I think anything under 300 is a really good deal. I recently found one in mint condition for 200, you basically have to find someone who's needs money and/or doesn't know the value of it. Some people buy a used 1200 for $400 a few years ago and figure it degrades in value when it doesn't at all... they've arguably went up in value.

But yea just keep an eye out, usually classified/local adds are a better bet than ebay. If you're near a reasonably sized city I think you could find a solid deal within a couple months fairly easily if you check regularly and jump on it when you find something. Ebay has more sharks looking for deals, and you won't really find someone who has no clue of the value and sells for cheap because the bids kinda dictate that.
