I almost always drink and smoke the goods when I'm practicing at home, that way if I do have a few to many while spinning out, at least I know how to handle the mixes in that condition. I however believe its much more profesional to not take that beer buzz into beer drunk stage, A few seem to help a few more tend to ruin it.

    recording is the key

    hi everyone,

i think the key to the question on that is to record, and listen to, your practice sessions.

i've tried mixing drunk, and 'further' and found out that every substance has a different effect on my habilities to mix. it depends also on how you are feeling at the time.

once its recorded you can listen to yourself and hear what you have to improve and what is good enough.

i've made some pretty good mixes like this and some of my strangest mixes were born this way. for instance i have mixed parts of cheech and chong's movies with house and psy trance, and they sure sound great. ;c)

The proof of the pudding to me comes from Sasha!

He gets absolutely battered off his brains and has been known often to play MUCH better as a result, seen it with my own eyes.

He seems to get into the music much more and then "feels" it, perhaps then he knows what the groove of people in front of him are feeling and then directs his attention towards that.

Or perhaps not, but still, if it works for him.......

    Brandon Block

Brandon Block has a reputation for being totally mashed when he plays. I've never had cause to complain about any of his mixing though!

Personally, my mixing is distinctly worse after even a small number of beers, and I'm not a lightweight! I think my beatmatching suffers before my perception does, so I can actually tell that my mixing is going downhill...

Anyway I don't need drugs to play, the music gets me on a high! The best way to "feel" the vibe is to turn it up loud! I honestly can't stop myself from dancing to a good track, sober or not

It's true that DJs are much more critical of mixing than your average punter. When I listen to my own mixes, or listen to another DJ in a club, I ALWAYS notice dodgy mixes, but if Mr Average Punter doesn't notice, who cares? As long as it doesn't stop me dancing (like a lengthy trainwreck) then even I don't care

Having said that, the music becomes much more immersive if the mixing is so good that you forget there's a guy there mixing it live

I'd quote Bongo, Alonzo and Sushi here. I'm not the one to make judgements or criticize but I whenever I'm playing or dancing or just having a good time, I feel no need for getting high on alcohol or drugs of any kind. In fact, I can only have a good time when I'm clean. Besides, the few times (some 3 or 4 in life, really) I got high on booze I could hardly make judments on my acts, let alone my mixing!!!

The for me is just that little figure, so to speak. So have another one!!!

Personally I never drink (or touch anything) when I'm live. I've tried it and I suck big time (more than usual, that is )

Having said that, I always go clubbing nicely mashed. If not then I spend the whole night listening to the DJ, cringing when he messes up and not enjoying myself at all. I find myself pushing or pulling an 'air' record whenever a tune is out...

if i'm going to be playing later i just nurse about two drinks for the evening. it loosens me up and i worry less about messing up and get into it.

herb is nice but get to high and you'll be forgetting what record you're going for when you dig in your crate and pull out something you think is funny. i ate soem hash brownies and did this once. i went from dnb to a beck remix then i was kicked off the decks much to my great relief.

also stay away from jello shots. i spun at a party that had tons of jello shots and thenext time i played those records i discovered they had quite a bit of jello on them
