thanks everyone for your replies. it was working fine connecting it through the line plugs. And nope, it didn't blow up the speakers. But connecting it through the phono line, wow, it really increased the volume of the Ttable. Now i can see the peak level meter working. But why is that phono plug-ins and line plug-ins differ so much? and what is the sense of having two??? except switching back and forth for different sound sources...

freefive - exactly that. imagine that you have one turntable, one cd player, a sampler and a drum machine and you want them all on the 600 - you only need one phono, etc...

as for why the phono output is so much lower than standard line sources - you've got to think about what a phono cartridge does. the needle rides in the groove moving not very much over the changes in the groove (the music pressed therin). that tiny amount of movement is translated to the cantilever which moves against tiny magnetic coils. this induces an electrical signal - a very small signal - which is the output of the turntable. therefore the signal must be amplified to a level the mixer can use. turntables have not traditionally had an integrated preamp although i believe stanton now makes a table with a standard line out. i'll stick w/ my techs thanks.

hope that made sense - jeff h

if records were cut without riaa equalisation the needle would jump around so much it wouldnt stick into the groove.
