setting up needles

anyone know of any sites that show you step by step how to setup your needles - ? i know it says in the 1210 manual but its not that clear andit gives no tips - also what weight should i be putting on dj craze stanton carts ?

if you have an s tone arm!!

set your needle at the same angle as the arm mount, in the same direction as the weights!! something like 25% off set!

if you have a streight tone arm, leve it!! thats why they are streight!

highten the tone arm adjustment to the top, anti skate to about half way, lift the needle up using the lift mechanism, and set it so it doesnt move either way,

weights up full, q berts trick is to take the weight off, turn it around and put it on full weight, so the tapered end with the black ring with the numbers on it is pointing away!!

never used craze needles, im sure 7 through and through!!

there's no need to apply maximum weight to the needle as this will wear out your records fast.

1: make sure the small auxillery weight is off, this is at the very end of the tonearm (not the counter weight)and looks like its part of the tonearm but unscrews.

2: connect your cart to the tonearm.

3: take tonearm off the rest and adjust the counter weight so that the arm is balanced.

4: Adjust the tonearm height so that it is parallel with the platter

4: set the counter weights dial to 0 and put tonearm back on rest.
Adjust the dial to manufacturer's recommendations

5: if scratching, set the anti-skate to 0

My setup: Ortofon Concorde Elektros
Technics SL1210 mk5s

Tonearm Height > 2.75mm
Anti-Skate > 0
Tracking Force > 4 grams

p.s. my needles stick like glue for scratching.

ahh .... just got some m44-7's cheers anyways - how long do these usually take to burn in ??

and also - who alligns there m44's 23 degree off straight or whatever - i heard this ****S your vinyl |?
and does it make much of a difference with m44's

23 degree angle does ruin your records. it burns them 2 times faster than if you put all the weight on the needle. people think its just the same as having a straight tonearm but S tonearms are longer than straight tonearms so when you put it at 23 dgrees the needles in a different position compared to straight tonearms, it puts excessive strain on the grooves of the vinyl. Besides you wouldn't need it for the 447s anyway. They stick really good just the way they are. For me they took about 2-3 days to completely break in.

leave the needles on the record for a day just so it has a little pressure or whenever your done skratching just leave the needle down.

Do not angle your carts. There is more to tone arm geometry than the needle being straight to tonearm. If you have good needles, s-arms stick pretty well.

that isn't bad at all?

how much weight should be on it when doing that?

just use the same weight you skratch with that should be fine and no its not bad i do it everytime i get a new pair of needles and I havent had a problem with it yet ive had these pair m447's for over a year and no problems so far

i heard your supposed to leave ure records running while u leave u new needles down for like 2 hours in a skipless groove or smething

Hi everyone - this is my first posting - been lurking for ages.

Bit of background - I have over 20 years experience in the hi-fi industry specialising in turntables - not a DJ myself - have many friends who are and I help them as I can. Hope I dont get overly flamed!!!

Although I appreciate the emphasis here is not sound quality - some of the tips posted so far are frankly quite alarming - i'm amazed some of you guys have any vinyl left!

I agree with HairyNames and pinstripe0404. Angling the stylus at weird angles is gonna totally mess up the grooved let alone the stereo imaging, although i suppose some of you are not worried about that?

I'll try and be helpful where I can at this more 'extreme' end of the market.

ive heard of this but ive never tried it besides all my records have dust in the grooves so i think that would be a bad idea

ahhhhhh!!

vinyl killer!! you treat your vinyl like you do women, chuck em down and just rince then out every now and then, in the mean time, keep em to one side and let the dust gather untill the next time you want a go!!

i got a lil rack, sorta like what you get in a record shop, with velvet covered foam deviders so you not only protect the vinyl, but keeps the scratchin vinyl clean too! stores 30 sample records!!

top notch!!
