Scratching in non-hip hop genres?

If i only try to on break downs where theres no vocals and i dont do anything crazy do you think it will sound tasteful of trashy?
 
that depends on your skills...

i remember dj hype scratching on jungle sets in '94... its nothing new... i remember a local reggae sound guy using scratches to drop the next tune in maybe around '91
 
Same here. Just because it doesn't have the hip hop swing doesn't mean you can't scratch to it. It's all about feeling the rhythm and knowing your limits. For example, I know I can 2 click flare up to about 110bpm (118 on a good day), but I'm not going to try to bust it out while spinning house at a gig.
