I guess those were before the Rick Rubin days. Sounds like the early Chuck D was heavily influenced by the early Bronx rappers like Furious Five and all the pioneers. I used to hate when my pops would play those songs from the 80's but I learned to appreciate it especially when I got into production later and learned about drum machines. That second Chuck D song's drum programming is pretty good for that time period. The earliest material I can ever recall hearing as a child with PE is
