And very soon there won't be a such thing as a 'major' option for hip hop, much like it was for most of the 80's. Especially when you have pre-Interscope Keef Chief being as or more popular than most of the SIGNED artist in the major label system in the last 6 months. What is missing is the viable independent alternative that maybe a better fit for his situation as oppose to choosing between Interscope and sticking with his current DIY situation.
... but Chief Keef wouldn't know how to monetize his buzz. He's going to need SOME TYPE of label to even begin to tell him the ins and outs of the business. They STILL will be out to get money off of him.
So are we going to end up with a slew of LITTLE MAJORS where people are still signing contracts but the "label" is saying they're independent because they have no radio play?
Little Majors all over the place... potentially could become as corrupt as the BIG majors.
It still takes a little business savvy to pull it all off. Think about those AND 1 street ballers... they just didn't have the "stuff" it took to take it to the next level. Juwan Howard is happier than them.
I would say he needs a good management team to help him with the business ropes and the proper label/entertainment company to turn the talent hopefully into dollar bills.
Little MAJORS all over the place is EXACTLY what its about, beautiful!! Isn't that where the music business originated from (even Atlantic Records at one point was independent) and is now reverting back to due to less of a need for a huge manufacturing/distribution system???
What was Cash Money BEFORE the Universal deal? A 'little major'. Now imagine if you removed all the Cash Money, No Limit, Roc-A-Fella, etc...out of the history books and what would you have?
EXACTLY.
I'm not taking a anti-major label stance because in certain situations its the best option but I am taking a pro-independent entrepreneur stance because that's what made this genre blow and its whats sorely missing right now. It will come eventually but hopefully not before hip hop is pushed into a permanent corner like Jazz, Soul and currently R&B (in the process of happening).
Kreayshawn is a whole diff animal.
A$AP we'll see how he does after his album drops.
But the article basically co-signs the indie idea and stuff that Drew said bout making the majors wait then sign. There's money out there if u smart, but the only smart people seem to be ol heads who have enough experience to say f__ a label.
It will be interesting to see how Krit's sales look like being that he followed the make the majors wait model and now it seems a lot of people are disappointed by his 1st official release.
I think it's different with Krit. He's a dope rapper, which brought him fans, but coming from that small town, he doesn't have much to talk about. All his records start to sound the same.

lol word, what messed Krit up was he released 3 free projects that all sounded similar.. the album was the chance to drop something fresh and unique, and it kinda dropped something that sounds the same as everything else hes dropped. which kinda messed him up.
it just all started to sound the same to me, hes gotta develop something a lil bit more unique and fresh sounding, all his albums/projects have the same format. Great live performer though
Rome, do you mean that their deals are worth Millions or they were given Millions because there is a big difference because if their deal is worth that much money im guessing it would include marketing and producing Merch and physical copies of their future albums etc in that case they wouldnt see any money ( Performance money excluded) untill their respective labels recoup those millions.

Oh, I was just quoting the numbers in the article.
.... in essence I was saying that if you rap, you run the risk of being obsure with 200 downloads on Datpiff or you could take the money that's in your face, build a buzz for when the label ish is over.
You're still going to rap with or without the "deal".
