Mobb Deep's Havoc speaks on 30 year old Rappers

I think a lot of rapper have the potential to become really good. But since "what you hear is what you get" very popular on the radio, rappers have done whatever it takes to keep the money. If that means not reading anything and having a bad vocabulary, they'll do it. regardless of age. lol

I agree with Havok.

And i'm 32.

Nikka, you too old to be rappin tryin to "get on".

Only one I know who got on after30 was Petey Pablo. He from my state, and I can't support that BS. Actually think he was like 28.

If you're not sort of ON at ANYTHING you're doing at 30... switch jobs or career fields.

30 is not old at all...

Here are the stages...

10 - 20 - Let me perfect my SWAG!!! "I'm a swaggagator dun!"... call up little chicks, get a bucket and drive it, fix it up, play sports, rap, do harmless dirt for fun, become cool somehow...

20 - 30 - Let me try to figure this ish out without making to many mistakes (kids, jail, AIDS), got a low paying job, looking around, trying to decide how you can kick your feet up and drink beer in the evenings until you get old and have a women next to you every night, never really stop running though - just pretend to be serious

30 - 40 - Oh hell, Ish just got REAL! Did I learn anything from 10 - 30? Did I do anything substantial? If you didn't... time to drop everything (slacker friends too), time to get it cracking... Momma don't think my saggin' pants are cute anymore, can't keep rapping with this bald spot forming, gotta eat, somebody said they were pregnant, I'll just watch Hip Hop and do it as a secondary thing, man I had fun though, I have to leave the streets, I have to try to find Ms. Right... I want to chill - I got 10 years...

40 - 50 - I gotta get my son out of jail, I don't have no college money for these kids, they gonna have to get loans like everybody else, I'm glad my woman still looks good, I don't have any bills whooo hooo!, I'm buying senseless ish, What can I buy today that I don't need, I'm bored, I don't know any of the college basketball players, Why is my kid still living here eating up my food? Did I fail as a Dad?, Guess I'll buy another gun, guess I'll get another car, guess I'll buy my woman something, guess I'll get drunk, Why does everybody else have high blood pressure, diabetes, had heart attacks, broke...,

50 - 60 - Guess I'll go to the Casino again, I know her from church... let me get at her - got that viagagragarga, look at these young boys my god they look foolish, this black leather hat and gold chain is the coolest thing EVA!, I hate paying for all these medications, my cadillac it way tighter than that young dudes caddy, guess I'll go grocery shopping with my wife and see who I can see, how do I use this phone, Guess I'll buy my grandkids some gifts for nothing, guess I'll get myself some Hennessey, guess I'll go back to the casino

60 - 70 - Whooo! I'm tired already, I just got up... what's on the news, let me get a beer, who is that outside, let me get dressed... phuck it I'll wait, who is this calling me at 10 am in the morning!!!!!, glad my son got his life together, his wife is something nelse that'll make somethin' melt!!! If I were 25 years younger I'd tear dat azz up!!! let me go down to the bar with Willie n nem..., what is that racket them kids is playing? I outta slap one of 'em up side the head... I still got it.

Too old to rap at 30? Gentlemen, I bring you the Gucci Mane.

Gucci's 32, and still raps everywhere. Age doesn't matter... its just about your talent. Or maybe your laziness.

Havoc said you can't just be GETTING ON after 30 in rap. I agree with that. Rap fans are younger than they've ever been and they look at the age 30 as being ancient.

Personally, I think 30 is the PERFECT age. You're not old and you're not young either. You still have a chance to make up time for all the stuff you blew off in your twenties and you have time to prepare for your life in the future. You know what worked and didn't work.

... with that said, you can't look at a person or hear a person and know how old they are. You can only guess. I don't really see age making you not make good music but if you're not ON and you've been trying, it probably wasn't meant to be. Let's say people find out that Drake is 34 but just looks young.... I doubt that would have any impact on the quality of his songs. BUT! he would've already been given the stamp of approval before people found out his age, if they had known his age first... different story. Crazy stuff when it comes to Hip Hop, where did this music come from! somebody should do a study. An OLD OLD country star can show up tomorrow... and nobody would care how old he was. They would just say "He just got DISCOVERED", if an OLD rapper shows up tomorrow... everybody would laugh. Hip Hop is a different animal. The only reason the Soulja Boys and Lil B's are around is because they supposedly "identify" with the youngsters. No seasoned rapper could get away with that stuff.

Theres no age restrictions to being a musician, but yeah I get what your saying. No respect for the "older".

That is the sad part about Hip Hop. You don't see young guys in Rock telling Mick Jagger or Santana "sit your old ass down!" It seems Rock respects their elder statesman a whole lot more than Hip Hop. Which again is too bad.

Honestly, I could care less how old a cat is. Skill is skill. I'm pushing 30 and I've yet to seriously record a track, but I've been writing rhymes since I was 13. But I'm not about to quit my day job to pursue a career in music, not happening. I'll casually make music as a hobby and if it goes past that, cool. But I don't expect any success from it and that's fine, this shit is an outlet for me. I'm not in it for the money. But as a cat that's pushin 30 myself, I don't foresee myself ever growing out of hiphop. I grew up listening to hiphop, you know. Its just in my blood, its a part of my generation. A lot of the cats I listen to now are older cats. i think the older heads bring more to the table in all aspects. They're usually more lyrically diverse, they have more to talk about since they've lived longer. The problem is, I don't really see anyone over 30 going from rags to riches and becoming a mainstream hit because the 90s babies are the ones buying up all the music these days and "setting" (more like recycling) the trends in hip-hop unfortunately. There are older cats just getting started but they'll stay underground more than likely, at least from a rapper standpoint. As a producer, shit, age isn't even a factor at all. You can be 90 years old pushin out dope beats and it won't effect your success in the industry. i wouldn't necessarily discourage someone in their 30s or 40s to drop everything and pursue a career in music and I don't believe that if you haven't "made it" by that age no matter when you started that you should just quit. See, some cats forget that music isn't about making money. That's a side effect. I miss the days when mainstream music was mainstream because it was good ****in music.

Regardless, there are always gonna be cats past 30 and 40 that still listen to hip-hop. Who do you think they'd rather listen to, the "Swag" crowd or the older cats who have somethin to say? There's a market for EVERYTHING.

I think the point was missed. If you're established already, you can rap on forever. Hell, Doug E Fresh can put out a club record tomorrow, someone's gonna buy it. But you don't wanna see some guy you never heard of for the 1st time when they're Doug E Fresh's age.

I'm pretty sure even Wayne's 30 by now. And he's at his prime, but he been around since like 14.
