first off i don't get into greatest of all time arguments, and i don't think melle mel is the greatest. but IMO he is ONE of the greatest. his raps still stand up to this day. but for the time period (early 80s)? his **** was incredible. and i feel he is being overlooked these days.
(for the record i listen to new stuff, including trap, just as much as the boom bap.)
