And Jay-Z snatches up yet another young guys tour/merch revenue.
Jay is 10 steps ahead of the entire world...all the time.
@troup who's a better businessman, jay z or p diddy?
Can somebody explain this. I know this goes back a while, but how is that you can be signed to one label group and sign with a diff management team at the same time. I remember back in the 90s day Violator was managing everybody, and remember RUN-DMC was manged by Rush even though he was with Def Jam and I think they were on Priority. I thought MMG had most stuff in house, isn't management or a cut, included in a 360 deal?
The same way you can buy your car from one place, and get it serviced by a different place.
A record label is in charge of just that...YOUR RECORDS. Releasing your records, selling your records, marketing your records, making more records.
Roc Nation is a MANAGEMENT company. They don't do records. They can do every other aspect of your career, that ISN'T selling records, most importantly TOURING.
And remember, Roc Nation is a joint venture with LIVE NATION...which controls the biggest and best venues in the WORLD.
Live Nation Entertainment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
So what's that mean?
Signing with Roc Nation basically means you're gonna be playing the best venues in the world. On the biggest tours in the world.
You're now apart of one of the best Touring Machines in music.
So guess who's gonna be an opening act on that next Watch The Throne tour?
And a 360 deal just means that record labels eat off ALL of your income. Doesn't mean that they invest significantly in that portion of your career.

They are different.
Puffy's a great ATTENTION GETTER. He can MAKE you pay attention to him. He's great at making things fun, exciting, and drawing attention to things.
Ciroc is so successful because Puffy draw's attention to it. Sean John is successful because Puffy draw's attention to it. The same way with all of his TV ventures. And starting a marketing company to keep the marketing dollars in house was a great move too.
Puffy's always been the biggest star in Puffy's world. Everything he does is to make HIMSELF a bigger star.
He's a very shrewd businessman, and I don't say that in any negative sense of the word. I've learned ALOT from Puffy..things that I use every single day.
Puffy is the FACE of every single one of his ventures.
Jay is different. The JAY-Z brand is not at the center of the moves he makes. He makes moves based on market conditions. His business moves are predictive.
Like the whole Roc Nation thing. Jay saw the way that record sales were falling, and decided to make the core of his empire TOURING, because that's going to be the most valuable part of an artists career going forward. Not only that, he partnered with the biggest venue management company in the world.
That's looking towards what the future of the music industry is going to be, and making decisions based on that.
Jay uses his star power to enhance is brands where needed. Puffy uses his brands to enhance his star power.
There's the difference.
They are both different, but each one is very, very effective.
I admire both of them, but the type of person that I am, I've had more success with Puffy's style of business...mixed with Jay-Z's foresight and diversification.
I learned how to be an Attention Whore from Puffy, Kanye and 50 Cent. And I shamelessly use it to my advantage. I can command ANY room I walk into, no matter how many people are in there.
Ask the people at the One Stop Shop conference in 2008, or at the ASCAP Conference in 2010. They still remember my name.
So I use that ability to MAKE people pay attention to me (Puffy), to get them interested in my other ventures (Jay-Z) that I'm currently involved in...
Music Production
Songwriting Writing
Recording/Engineering
Mobile Music Apps
Mobile Entertainment Apps
Nightlife Promotions
Artist Development
Artist Management/Consulting
I have a meeting today with a Talent Casting Scout/Manager in the Stage/Film/Music realm. She's interested in me working with some of her talent as well as teaching some Seminars.
And at it's core, it's all about SELLING INFLUENCE. Which is what Puffy and Jay-Z do VERY well.
I continue to learn from all of them.
Even when he's being silent, I'm learning from Dr. Dre. Branded hardware was BRILLIANT. I'm very eager to see where Jimmy Iovine takes it next.

@troup what do you think about 360 deals for upcoming artists, they have to start somewhere right?

Thought Roc Nation was a record label lol.
Cool. Do you know who manages Ross? Seems like the goal was to keep everything in house, although I get strategic importance of being associated with Roc Nation.
