Music is free to the fans , is what people mean. Not to the people making the music lol.
So who's responsible for this money? The artists or the label? If the artists flops, does that label say u owe us a cool mil+?
Well lets bring up all the facts
This song came out in 2010, a lot has changed even from then with the introduction of spotify and things of that nature, rihanna has already dropped another album, and getting ready for ANOTHER one soon.
and the term Music is Free, doesnt mean that everything is done for 0. It means that sales dont matter, because Rihanna is gonna go on a tour that grosses well over what they spent on that whole album. They worry about the licensing and things of that nature, thats where theyre gonna make their money and fans really dont have a direct impact on that
which means Music is Free, Rihanna could sell 0 albums, but it wouldnt matter (because if you look at her sales of her ALBUMS (not singles)) she isnt that great of an artist sales wise compared to others in her same niche market

and yes if it flops the artist is responsible, you wont see any money until youre out of the Red, and sometimes they wont allow you to drop another album to pay it off.. if they do allow you to drop another album, you get more debt and all the money you make off that new album is used to pay off the old debt lol. Its crazy how it works
guess i should be clearer
if you dont have a 360 deal, sales matter.. a lot, a whole ****ing lot. Sales will be the only way the label makes their money off of you
If you have a 360 deal? sales matter, but not even a percentage as much as before, because all those shows, all those commercials, all those movies and things that youre in and that is set up. the label gets a piece of
so if a label spends a million on an ace hood album.. and he only sells 25,000 copies... well thats gotta suck for him
if a label spends 8 million on a rihanna album.. and she only sells you know 300k at first.. thats fine, because 1. she's gonna hit platinum eventually because her songs are constantly hits and in rotation, 2. shes always on tour (which boosts album sales dramatically as well), and 3. they getting a piece of EVERYTHING that shes doing

like Bruno Mars album sold like 30k copies first week or some crazy amount, but he was featured on a hit record and once people got wind of who he was, he started getting more shows, more looks, more performances and more opportunities to profit.. which boosted his songs and album sales through the roofs to the point where his music was every where and he became one of the biggest writers at the time
@as20gp does that 20k for the producer get split to the publishing company?

that depends on the deal they have setup with the publisher, they probably are taking a percentage though, idk about a split.. but the song theyre talking about was produced by Stargate.. so they gettin that 20k.. and then they gettin the split from the writing camp cause theyre writers so you lookin at close to 30k for a stargate joint
I remember watching a ace hood interview and he said a little after cash flow came out he was about to get evicted, smh. I guess this is why.

I remember dream saying that he got 15 million for writing umbrella
