Already been as "successful" as i'll ever be. I've been on a downward spiral the last few years. Most I can see for myself now is possibly making 1 record everyone can kinda remember and fading away with an extra $60-200k off royalties and pub in the bank. No one will ever even remember who produced the record, lol.

I once thought I was on my way to being an underground household name, never thought I'd be a "superproducer", but thought I could get as far as guys like Streetrunner or Needlz. Realistic dream from where I was at at the time...Never worked out, now I've just been focused on local artists, maybe I can give one of them a good shot at success.

Two things that annoy me are people who are positive out of ignorance, and people who are negative out of bitterness. People who are neither usually get along with me and agree with most of what I say. People who are one of the 2 think I'm the other.

Is success only determined by how many major records you produce? I have achieved everything I wanted to when I started out making music. It would be nice to get a major placement but at the same time I really don't care if it happens or not. I'd rather just keep doing independent releases with indie artists and if the majors knock at my door so be it. Hell my wife wants me to get on with a major project more than I do.

Shouldn't have created the poll with such a large focus on placements, although it is ment to be pretty general in terms of success. I realize that success in any industry can mean many things.

"Placements" is a taboo word on these boards. Confuses me, because "success" is a definitive word. It's the acheivement of something desired. I'm not saying everyone desires the same thing, but if you were inspired to get into production because you heard something you liked on a recording and thought "I wanna do stuff like that", chances are you've thought of placing yourself in a similar postion to the producer who intrigues you.

An underground artist is still a "placement". Maybe it's just me, but most underground artists I work with hope to someday be more than underground artists. Again, maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't mind getting a good payout for my work in music from time to time. There's NO other way to do this than getting 'placements". A "placement" doesn't have to be an artist on a label, it can be in a movie, commercial, video game, radio ad, some guy you never heard of off the net making his first song ever...but there's no other way to be financially compensated for your work in music than a "placement" except selling your own music directly to consumers.

Someone has to want to pay to aquire your music to "place" it somewhere. So I've gotten to the point where it just confuses me why people don't feel they should "place" any emphasis on getting "placements".

"Major Placements" is an entire different ball game, but if you wanna live of your music, someone has to pay you for your services. Even if your plan isn't to get rich, I doubt many producers would rather go to a 9to5 than sit around getting paid to do what they love. Not arguing, just sparking a convo.

Very good point with the "placements" aspect, although I was trying to avoid a debate over opinion in success and was referencing to placements in the most general sense. Assuming most people would consider "placement" in the major category. I agree with what you are saying but am more interested in seeing the overall response. I'd dare to say most are niave of their actual potential. (which was going to be another topic with a poll focused on age.)

I'm looking to see what the actual expectations are of the different age groups. Without letting the cat out of the bag, a few people are entertaining the idea of making a legitamite run at offering an alternative site to Soundclick, Rocbattle and those alike. Just a little research

Based on how you're down to help people round here, i think that energy will come back around and give you another shot to do the damn thing. Keep pushin deranged, after we fall (or drift) down the only way to go is up.

If your definition of success is to have a few known artists rap over your beats irregardless of whether it ends up on a album, single, mixtape, online promo and it doesn't matter if they're signed to a major or indy or DIY and the monetary return is secondary in priority then right now in 2012 with the saturation of music output aspiring producers have the BEST opportunity to become "successful".
