You don't know someone is a biter until you get bit. lol

And honestly, everyone is a biter. It's called being inspired. It's all good. Everyone builds off of other people's ideas, and adds their own twists to them. That's the great thing about music, and creativity in general.

It's like friendly competition. I love it when I hear a track that lights a fire under my ass to go and compete with it.

That's why every producer should have at least 1 other trusted producer that they bounce ideas off of, that they get critiques from...someone that inspires them with their creativity.

I finished a song earlier this week with the same chip-chord style rhythms on the hook as this . . . actually one of my vocalist hoes brought it to my attention like yesterday because I'm not a Marsha fan like that.

    Marsha Ambrosius - "With You"

but this record here . . . turned out waaay better than what I had envisioned for mine. like this shit here jams x infinity.

    Jill Scott - "So Gone"

I had a song using that same progression . . . that got featured on PMP like in November. . . and I don't never use no common chord progression all my shit be some extra-terrestrial shit. mine was [Amin69 to something else then Gbm11-FMaj9], theres was [C-something to something else to Gbm11-FMaj9]. which is fine, but my track was 75-80% strings as well. Until Kirko Bangz rapped on this shit like in January I didn't know it existed. but what took their shit to the next level (besides the songwriting), was Jairus being brought in on the lead. and Jairus is a good dude, met 'em in Dallas a few times.

being INSPIRED and BITING are two, totally different things.

a rule of thumb that i personally use?

be INSPIRED by art OUTSIDE of your element...

    FOR EXAMPLE.

i tend to find "INSPIRATION" in MUSEUMS.

i don't find "INSPIRATION" from other MUSICIANS.

being "INSPIRED" in your field draws a THIN LINE between INSPIRATION and BITING

There is a fine line. But the people who do it know when they are biting and being inspired.

    For instance...

I bit Pharrell on this joint....

PMP Worldwide - The Best Opportunities for Producers and Songwriters

The lead synth line...The progression...was pretty much taken directly from here...

How his lead synth line stutters at the end and repeats over and over? Yup. When I was making my track, i thought of this video and knew I wanted a synth line like Pharrell's. And it went perfect.

I was inspired by the lead line in the video. But I think I did enough to make it my own, so that I fell on the inspiration side of that biting line.

You should try being inspired by other musicians. Listen to them, study them, be impressed by them, compete with them...You'll be a better musician for it.

    Now THIS is called BITING...

I completely bit the rising synth on the hook for my song here...

PMP Worldwide - The Best Opportunities for Producers and Songwriters

    From here... (:40 seconds)

Everyone knows it. Everyone recognizes it...

And everyone knows that it was done in "paying homage" to one of the most classic instrumental records ever. They tell me "nice touch".
