They got money so I'm sure it's no problem for them. Also, you can get a lot of samples cleared pretty easy without paying big bucks. It's really just a matter of going through the process which is sort of a long one, but there are companies that'll do it for you. Like I said they got the dough, so it really doesn't matter.

I know a rapper named Lord Tariq. He made that song with Peter Gunz a few years back called "Uptown Baby". They used a Steely Dan sample and it cost them $100,000.00 That's alot for a struggling artist. Most are lucky if they get a $500,000 budget for an entire album. There are a few mega rappers who can afford to pay $250,000.000 for a sample clearance but most can't afford it.

They got phucked on that deal though, for the simple fact that they went about clearing the sample AFTER the song became a hit. Therefore, the publisher could demand more money. If they had cleared it before hand, by them being a no name artist, it would haev been for much less. Plus they ain't get no publishing. The same thing happened with Eric Serman's "Music". The Gaye family taxed him.

i saw this on another board and just copied it, panik from the molemen posted this originally on their site i just thought it was interesting. If they paid 100 grand for that steely dan they could of done a little more than just loop it dont you think?? i got the steely dan album on wax and its EXACTLY the same. sounds like they got screwed, cause no one has heard from them since that summer.

They could have chopped up the sample but I guess the producer(I know Tariq the rapper) liked the original sample better. Also who knows if Tariq and Gunz would have liked the chopped up version. The problem that happened to them happens to many artists today. The record label was concerned with making a hit and not developing the artist. They were not even a group at first. They were two separate artists trying to get on. When the single blew up, their label rushed to make an album trying to capitalize off the buzz. Gunz was actually down with Shaq. They had a follow up single called Whats that sound but it was garbage. They were clearly trying to make another hit record. It had that cheesy radio feel to it. Tariq stilll appears on underground joints in NYC. He's back home in the projects living with his mother. He bought a motorcycle, copped a few jewels and slayed a few honeys(the ladies always loved him) but he did not get mad loot from the single.

I was saying it's not expensive if your only pressing say 2000 copies and if your not sampling some big hit. I guess I should have stated it better. This is based on information I got from a company that actually clears the samples for you. They told me though, for instance if you sample someone like Sting, then you'll have to give up 100% publishing, plus pay his ass major loot.
