What about bad schools, run down neighborhoods, single parent households, gangs, prostitution, gun violence, disease. These are the real problems our youth are facing not know damn hip hop.

Everybody talking about how hip hop effects kids in the hood, but they've probably never been in the hood. If hip hop was to blame why aren't rich kids who listen to hip hop, not going to bad schools, living in the slums, selling dope, and killing each other habitually on a daily basis?

There are plenty of people to blame and hip hop artist are at the bottom of the list. If we cleaned up all hip hop tommorrow crime wouldn't stop or get better. Given that violence was prevelant and even worse during the late 70's and eighties before hip hop culture really hit. Fixing hip hop to save our communtities would be like putting a baindaid on 10 bullet wounds.

i heard barack got D's in school im not sure if thats true. I really wonder about him hes portrayed as the elite intellectual who gets impatient with the ignorant stupid masses, but some of the stuff he says, for example calling his republican constituents 'enemies' and basically promoting the crack trade as a means to an end seems really misguided.

i couldnt believe when he said he listens to lil wayne and jay. A) i dont even believe it hes not one of those ageless hood ziggans with his pants hanging off his waist and B) these mother****ers openly promote smoking weed and gun toting and selling coke and cooking crack.

it would be stupid of him to even say hes a bob marley fan cause that would be in a sense a tacit approval or promotion of a marijuana lifestyle, regardless of whether or not its bad for you because the fact of the matter is its against the law.

bottom line if im a 15 year old in the hood and moneys tight in my household etc. selling a little weed or even crack would already seem like an attractive avenue, even if i thought it was morally wrong. i could justify it in my young mind even if i thought it was wrong as a means to an end. 'here comes rob/ his gold is shimmery/ he gives me 200 for a quick delivery/ i do it once/ i do it twice/ now theres steak with the beans and rice.'

and then the mother****ing president gets on the horn and tacitly approves of this shit? like as long as this path leads to you being a successful businessman and philanthropist eventually then its justifies?

baracka waka flames on some dumb shit on this one he really is. just like shitting on poor white people in the midwest saying they cling to religion. he just comes off as a dumb mother****er sometimes

its incredible that people promote what they promote and still act like theyre out for the community. theres a huge difference between the 'art as a mirror' i.e. illmatic-style street narration and the jay-z 'im gettin it you mother****ers talking about it im getting it whip it soft or hard heron got less steps than britney that mean it aint stepped on you can spit a few words i can triple that in birds whip it around it still comes back hard shit"

mother****in jay z promotes hustling. he ****ing teaches you how. 'head to the heights where big dope is processed speak slow cause he dont speakey no english after a couple of trips and he takes a liking and your moneys straight hes gonna give you consignment,' teaching how to cook etc. at least young jeezy and them dont act like they dont promote the shit. dont get me wrong a **** with jays music but what can i say im a sucker for a dope beat and a virtuoso flow. but my fams from the heights and i never got to see the neighborhood except driving thru and ive been robbed in queens and that shits all because of the crack trade which hes promoting

obviously prohibitions the problem prohibition guarantees a monopoly to whomever is ruthless enough to establish one. but these mother****ers in the black community and the violence they promote just take it to a level where it doesnt even need to be. 'i want your wrist lit like mine, anything to keep momma from crying, visiting you from behind that glass while you await sentencing but the judge is saying life like it aint someones life' the bootleggers during alcohol prohibition got violent with each other also but during crack it just became an onslaught. 'deep rooted in slavery, self hatred, the jewish stick together friends in high places' maybe thats what the word is. but this shits ****ed up. government ****ed it all up hating on the black man's jazz swag and outlawing coke because it gave the negro the balls to approach white women as the sensationalist mother****in press of the day would portray. the worlds so ****ed up and its money and power and the pursuit of them thats ****ed everything up i dont know man

'why, why? tell those mother****ers its human nature'

but barack is a fool to tacitly cosign a machiavellian ends-justifies-means stance on the dope trade by promoting jay-z.

did mother****ing jay-z ever even move bricks? mother****ers sick with the rhymes but hes the most materialistic mother****er ever.

materialism is god to the hood because when you have nothing something seems like the greatest good. we need knowledge of self and love and brotherhood and fellowship but mother****ers would have you believing we need escalades and blown out houses with sub zero freezers and five bathrooms. its ****ing preying on the poverty stricken hood dwellers to wave this materialism in their face

how many ****in coldplay songs are about rims and jewelry? but better yet how many langston hughes poems are about money and power?

hip hop needs to nourish the soul, not exploit our human greediness/poverty/desire for material wealth

i love all you mother****ers no homo and we all need to find the truth within ourselves. if it means no blunts or no sippin for a month do that get your head clear and find peace with yourself. build up your brotherman be a good friend, relative, coworker, neighbor whatever it is. build up the people around you. worldly wealth and power are gone in an instant, the collapse of bear sterns and lehman bros etc should show us that. i know its alot easier said than done especially when youre going to bed with no dinner. and thats what i hate about the hip hop community exploiting the people in poverty and turning brothers against brothers

'would you let the system make you kill your brotherman? No dread no
Dumbest most ignorant post Ive seen In awhile. Full of sterotypical B.S. from some pencil pushing college kid who couldn't tell you shyt about the hood except from what hes seen on a music video..lol.. But hey we let any idiot with an idea post...smh

The Pro-Black hip hop movement occurred during a time that Reganomics was in full swing, crack was DECIMATING our urban neighborhoods, and gun gang violence was at an all time high.

The only hip hop that was on the radio was Public Enemy, X-Clan, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Kid n Play, BDP, KRS One, Big Daddy Kane, etc...

Hip Hop clothes consisted of African colors, Malcolm X hats/watches, African Medallions, and a hoodie/t-shirt from your favorite HBCU (Historically Black College / University).

Hell, Bart Simpson was even Black at that time.

So explain that? Was that hip hop responsible for making people sell crack, and do drive by's? Because that was the most positive era hip hop has EVER seen, and the positive music DOMINATED the airwaves...

And that was one of the most VICIOUS times that modern urban america has ever seen.

    So explain that?

To say music doesn't influence the youth is absurd.

Yes, art reflects life, but it also reinforces those elements of life WHILE reflecting it.

Yes, there's always been crime, slums, drug trafficing, violence etc... but once IT GOES MAINSTREAM, it becomes a part of POP CULTURE. Gangsta Rap has definitely become a part of POP CULTURE. It's glorified crime, violence, and sociopathy in MILLIONS of homes all across America..

Does that mean that the youth are going to drop what they're doing to conform with hip-hop culture? NO! But excessive exposure to ideas plant seeds, and a kid's environment will water those seeds eventually.

I've SEEN it happen right before my eyes - I watched as my younger sister began to become molded by music, music videos, TV shows, Movies etc... I noticed her emulating the attitudes of singers, rappers, etc...

I've seen hip-hop culture affect my area as well. All the white chicks out in my parts ALL want black boyfriends, and luckily it works in my favor hahahaha Can't complain but POP CULTURE has influenced their taste in boys, and now these chicks all wanna go BLAACCKKK.

If you can't tell rap has influenced the youth, you're either:

    1) Too old to see what's going on, or too old and naive to attribute a culture change TO hip-hop
    2) Living in an area in which the general population doesn't listen to hip-hop
    3) Not paying attention to the attitudes and behaviors of youth.
    4) Are in denial; you don't want to admit that your favorite genre of music has an influence on youth.

Not everyone has a solid upbringing - this means the child will look to 3rd party sources on ways to interpret reality. Hip-hop is often a go-to source because it appeals to youthful rebellion, the "cool/swag" factor, and angst.

    So explain that?

Bro, no one's trying to assert that Rap Music CAUSES crime. Rather, my take is that Gangsta Rap reinforces the attitudes of crime-culture on impressionable youth.

Yes, CRIME was there first. Then "art" reflected it by broadcasting it to AREAS that were never even hit by the crack epidemic! Soon, the reflection of a relatively underground pocket became the NORM in pop culture. Music is just one of many influencing factors in one's environment, but what makes MUSIC especially effective in influencing behavior is that it registers easily in the subconscious through the use of repetition.

Obviously, a person's day-to-day environment is going to influence them more than a song they hear on the radio... but what if EVERYONE in their environment was PLAYING the same godd@mn song (or songs with similar themes) ALL THE TIME?! There's no escape!

Music doesn't MAKE people do anything. We all have free will, and if you sell crack, it's because YOU took the steps to do so. But that doesn't negate the fact that there were elements in your environment (friends, family, socioeconomic situations) that helped you form your decision. The ideas implanted or reinforced by music are definitely one of those influencing factors.
