It's probably cliche, but I consider Sgt. Pepper to be one of the greatest pop/rock albums of all time. Yeah, they probably were influenced a lot by Pet Sounds, but considering what position the Beatles occupied at the time, and the album they decided to produce makes it superior in my opinion. They took pop to a whole new level, and it was the first time any mainstream group (let alone the biggest group in the world at the time) truly used the recording studio as an instrument. I've read books about what they and George Martin did to create that album and it only made me appreciate it that much more. "A Day in the Life" still gives me goosechills everytime I listen to it.
It's probably only a little bit of an overstatement to say this album changed the landscape of pop and ushered in the era of album rock. I'm also willing to bet that because of the decentralization of modern media, there will never again be a group that begins to approach the widespread popularity phenomenon as the Beatles.

I definitely agree with that, Sgt. Pepper is one of the greatest albums ever, and perhaps their best. My favorite Beatles song has to be Revolution, the electric guitar version, followed closely by Strawberry Fields and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. There will never be a world-wide phenomenon in music like the Beatles again. Their timing was perfect and the music is classic. It will live forever.
