im just wondering how they pull off those crazy beats. They do this cool thing were thehy speed up a hit (snare for example) so fast and they somehow make it sound good. Whenever I try to speed something up that fast it just sounds loud and anoying ( i know turn it down, it still sounds bad). Im just wondering, how do they do those beats?

    thanks!

doesn't aphex twin use his own software? I think he mentioned Recycle in a interview. Go Aphex\Squarepusher. On that Go Plastic album, Squarepusher used alot of timestretching\chopping\craaassee pitch shift. Try chopping up some loops really intricately, I can get some cool pitch shift skitzness in Acid. But to inquire a little: what Squarepusher\Aphex do you mean? I'm blabbing about the new stuff ( you know, go plastic, drukqs). Sphex needs to release something new, I foolishly preordered Smogphace cause I got excited. One decent track + 15 minuites of random noise ffor $18AUD. THAT'S HARD EARNED MONEY MANG!

I'm not too sure where that piece of pure evil is. It's just that I got it in on order, then I was paranoid to go to the record store for a week, cxause I didn't have the money. And it's a common after-school activity to browse impact rekkids. I was afraid the checkoutchick would wack me with my schoolbag. Or do something evil. Then I paid for it, but now frequent Landspeed records. And noise is teh fun to play around with. I just can't see the logic in creating all that raaaaandom shi0t, then releasing it. Has anyone got that Help Aphex Twin remix disc? Some of the tracks on theere are wikkid, because of the crzy factor.

    dormir,

I used to have the same problem trying to work out how they did that masterful trick. I found if you play with the attack and decay of the sample it sounds a million times better. Also, if you listen closely, you'll notice Aphex always evolves those sounds constantly changing the cutoff, velocity, resonance etc. Also he doesn't use his own software, he builds his own hardware units.

its all a bit of a wank. dont be fooled. theres so much bull**** about aphex.... he shrouds his music in a viel of mystery and mis-information to make it seem more profound.

squarepusher.... well he isnt too difficult to get your head around.

he takes time and talent. he uses an MPC and edits his loops with the 16/slice function and he is a master at it.

there is no "instant skill" program. understanding rhythms is essential.

also they have both made use of granular editors sometime in their careers.

yeah, it is a bit of a wank. Although Aphex Twin never really claimed that his music was prefound, in interviews he gives the impression that he dislikes it. That track he did with phillip glass *shame*. The orgiinal was cool though.

LOL! MPC! Tom would laugh his ass off.

Squarepusher does not use an MPC at all. He's got a couple hardware sequencers (QY20, QY70, DR660), a couple samplers, a really nice eventide effects unit, some tube compressor and a couple old school monophonics (MS10, SH101). He's got a 73 fender bass and an old rich.
