djcorea, I think you've captured the main flavours of d+b there, apart from more mellow Bukem-type stuff.

To be honest I think it's a bit pedantic to split it up any more than this. Otherwise you might as well label every track with a different style. Besides, an interesting DJ will cross several borders - e.g. when I saw EZ Rollerz, his stuff ranged from quite jazzy stuff (which I'm not as keen on) to some very nice dark hardsteppy stuff.

Agreed, "intelligent" is an utterly pretentious label.

    agreed

A good and capable dj would combine all dnb styles. It's really cool to hear a combination of many styles that fused together create something new.

Lately I'm also very interested in the combination of dnb and deep house and I'm workin on a tune that would fuse these two. I'm still tryin to define the style.
    Corea, over & out.

    Agrees....

Yes, classification of genres is not only spliting hairs but ultimately harmful to the music if you think about it. But, unfortunately, humans in their need to express everything in primitive forms of comunication like words - instead of the highly complex sounds found in musical arrangements - have to classify things to describe them to others.

I personally would "classify" Aphrodite as a junglist not a drum & bassist (as well as a bit on the crowd sell out side, too) but he has demonstrated the ability to "cross over" to more atmospheric sounds which I personally prefer. In fact "jungle" to me is where subs like "jump-up" and the like would belong as well - that is IF I supported that classification crap.

    Look at all this:
Techno, Trance, Drum&Bass, Intelligent, Jungle, Ragga, Banghra, Hard Core, NRG, Jump-Up, Atmospheric, Dark, Dark-Step, Tech-Step, Jazz-Step, Hard-Step, Beats, Breaks, Breakbeat, Dub, Dub-Electric....

I mean what are we gonna do, one day we'll have to classify EVERY track as a sub-genre, especially with the diversity of music these days. And boys and girls I gotta tell ya, it's just getting more diverse every day with newer and better technology and newer and better brains recreating sound.

I'm currently making DnB tracks with Native American flutes and drums, Didjeridoos, Tibetan Bhuddist chants, and a number of other "world" sounds; what the hell is that gonna be called? "World Dub Electric DnB"? It's rediculous! And there's nothing I can do about what people call it or how people recieve it in the end either, that's the funny part. If people like it, and want to one day pay money for it, great. If not, I really don't care and it wont affect how I make my music or why.

Danny Williamson (aka LTJ Bukem), one of the most musically educated artists left in the business - and who I JUST saw in Vegas btw - is even sporadically producing house tracks these days, although you won't hear him spin any for unappreciative/unfaithful US crowds. You will find one, though, at the end of his relatively recently released "Journey Inwards" - a "down tempo, jazzy" kind of release (here we go again, haha). I don't particularly get along that well with house sounds, myself (not deep or complex enough for me), but I can completely identify with the artistic need to expand and include "lost" elements of sound.

I don't know about harder stuff, but Bukem & all the guys under the Good Looking sister labels; Fabio & all the guys under Creative Source stuff; new guys like Cadence and True Intent on the scene; all these people have very similar atmospheric sounds, yes, but they don't stick to the same old same old processing of "music for the industry" or "music for the genre". They make the muisc they love whether it's loved by anyone else or not.

That's the definition of integrity, and it's becoming extinct.

A relevant note about Bukem, too, is his motto (which you find everywhere within the G.L.O.):

"It's all just a matter of opinion."

in my opinion Corea's answer to the question was the most simple and refreshilngly clear answer to the question. He just laid it out straight. Good call. And then i find out he's going to have a go at fusing deep house and drumandbass ... WAAAAAAAA! this guy is a fcuking legend! and he lives in Milan .... some people are so cool, i have to indulge in hero worship ....

but see, that's the reason why I love drum and bass...

    it's about FUSION...

from jazz to mechanical shredding sounds, be it housy or techy, be it samba or salsa.... drum and bass is everything... I think it's the genre that experiments the most

(oooh I hope I ain't getting bashed now
