Anyone think the 1,000 subgenre's are hurting electronica?

    Well I'm curious.

I think electronic music probably has more subgenres than any other out there, and seemingly for all the "depth" that EDM has to offer the masses, I think it all gets filtered out by the inner elitism/snobbish behaviour within the culture.

I understand there are different flavors to almost anything out there. Hip Hop is also broken down, Rap, West coast, east coast, gangsta, whatever. It's still a pretty strong scene due to it's unity amongst the listeners (if not necesarily the artists) when it comes to defining "what do you listen to?"

I mean take rock for example, Static X sounds nothing like AC/DC but I bet you could agree they both are just "Rock" to the average listener.

But if you play a Trance anthem vs a House classic, people tend to break it down into a debate over what genre it belongs to, and worst of all, people who can't tell the difference between the 2 will label it as "Techno" which is a genre all to its own (an unpopular one at that)

SO I guess I'm asking, do you think overcategorizing the genre is saturating it and hurting the unity amongst the listeners?

I usually stick by two genres - good stuff and bad stuff. The rest of 'em are pretty trivial and useful mostly to reviewers and insecure wankers whose moms have categorized their socks and underwear so the only thing they're capable of is to spend their time doing the same to music.

    me being provocative? nonsense!

Well, seems this board is predominantly hip hop so I may need to leave a little educational material to those who don't get what I'm going on about.

I can't post links but yeah, just copy/paste this

yeah u have to know that it's pretty much all about hip hop..there's barely ever posts in this section and theres 5,000 daily in rap. (i was exaggerating..i think).

i think the seperation is kinda good though, because i know when i want to listen to electronica there are surely different vibes that are associated with each subgenre.

Actually, to tone down my previous entry a bit, let's say I'm not that irritated by genres or subgenres until someone starst arguing about them. I don't mind something being described as "slowcore illbient doomfolk with acoustic-industrial flavours", but as soon as it's an argument, I'm pissed off.

sub genres don't hurt us. outsiders hurt us. it's the same as watching everyone who doesn't know anything about electronic music calling everything techno because it's the only word they know. the masses really aren't exposed to all the music because of alot of factors i wont even get into.

i've seen just as many hip-hop heads battle over what's what, i reckon you get it everywhere. we're just lucky to have a thread about us because we can change ourselves that quickly

I think it's silly how many sub genres and sub sub sub genres there are, some of them aren't even worth stating (like the blah-step genres... they all sound the same right?) but at the same time it's making life simple for a musician to choose a path way, people to find that music, categorizes era's and makes people sound damm intelligent when they talk/argue about it.

If i said "i do electronic music" people will think i do the whole thing. Techno, house, DnB, breakcore... and it's a bit to broad to say that nowadays.

Though, contradicting myself, if someone does ask me what type of music i make, i'll simply say electronic music because it sounds more recognisable than saying chip-tune or casiocore or speedbass!! And some people, sometimes, don;t know the genre and hence don't know what you're talking about....

To conclude. I like the sub-genres... but there are too many and some genres a repetition of another.

it seems that most subgenres were created by music journalists. some of them are vague and have no real meaning, while others are actually a good description of the sound. either way, subgenres don't really matter, since most artists don't stick to just one for their entire careers.

I completely agree with you. I doesn't matter how you name the style, it only matters whether you like it or not. Probable if two different people would say that the same song is from a different subgenre.
