Streaming Contract example-Spoftify/Sony

I though this would be interesting to discuss given the other thread about Tidal and artist royalties.
Money quote:
The Verge was unable to determine how much the artists get from this deal — “Some artists have clauses in their contracts to get a larger share of the streaming revenue, and some artists are still operating under CD-era contracts that only give them 15–20 percent of their streaming revenues” — but this much is clear: If this is characteristic of other deals, it seems like the record labels are making bank off the streaming services.

What a surprise the majors are getting big loot

- Why wouldn't they? They own the music. Money from streaming can't replace physical and digital sales though...

- Everybody gets paid except the SONGWRITERS. Streaming services, label, the artist they all get $$$. People that are actually creating the music don't get shit. A million plays on Pandora = $60 in songwriter royalties.

I’m just saying the producers and people who work on music are getting left out -- that’s when it starts getting criminal. It’s like you’re working hard and you’re not receiving. In any other business people would be standing before Congress. They have antitrust laws against this kind of behavior. It almost seems like when it applies to music no one really cares who’s cheated. It’s so disorganized; it’s so disconnected from reality.

Haha, u sound like u have an axe to grind my FP friend. LOL.
While I sympathize with the plight of the artist/producer, this is capitalism at its finest. The owners in all industries seek to maximize profit and often they can give a damn about the workers.
The only time they adjust is when workers use whatever resources they have to seek change(boycotts, protests, etc).
"fair" is a word that has little to no place in capitalism/liberalism.

$60 dollars for a million plays is crazy. Unless musicians get something like SAG, I don't see any changes soon.
As far as what Jay said, there are antitrust laws against monopolies and such, but there are no laws to tell a private entity how much a worker should get paid outside of the minimum wage.

It would hurt many people but here's a thought.

Far Fetched. . . .

Artists cut ties with the labels. Function independent even if it means on free vehicles. They can create their own websites and promote them to drive max traffic to them. Sell merch, music, videos, tickets and add space as much as they can. Bottom line is that the big companies would ultimately die including Sony, Universal, Warner and Spotify Pandora etc..

The old labels found artists, put them with producers, pais for studio time, handled the image, booked the shows etc....

Today, a label is really only a huge bank account for promotions.

Everything else is being done by artists. Creating their own image, following, music, videos etc....

Everything you mentioned is already happening except you can't cut out the majors because they're tied to majority of the media outlets (film/Tv, Radio, etc..) which controls and influences a mass majority of people, so they'll never die out.
