So my team and I (Northern Lights) have been recently classified under this new genre called Cloud Rap, with artist like main attrackionz, danny brown, asap rocky, left leberra, lil b, western tink, beautiful lou and a few others. I was wondering if any1 else heard of this new genre and what is the definition of "CLOUD RAP" ---- granted: i am in the clouds when making my FREAKY music but does cloud mean anything besides that?

I always though Lil B was making "Based Music" and the rest of those guys were just copying him, but here's a couple links about so called "cloud rap":

idk man... wouldnt say they copying off him, danny brown, left leberra and tink go hard.. pause n none of em rap like lil b, only thing similar is the production, but squadda b n beautiful lou do alot of it.. so it seems more like weird beats determine if its "CLOUD RAP" or not.. n yea i peeped that interview

Man, I thought this was something they only did in Rock music. A few years ago, I heard some bands grouped in a genre labeled "Forest Rock". My old band was once labeled "Spark Rock Music" by a local club. Ppl were like "WTF?" I get that certain artists and songs might give you a feeling of being somewhere, or feeling some way, but do we need whole genres for it? I think it's just a method of trying to get the artist to stand out, which I guess is actually OK. But not if it's cheesy-sounding.

Cloud Rap started in late 09-early 2010. Not necessarily new. (Just pointing it out)

They be rapping over beats like this??? If so I might check it out. Sounds like some cloud music other than being based music lol

I like that joint, I like these 2 joints too

Kinda remind me of wiz a lil I like the beat and how it switch at 34sec's in

This joint got the same vibe as lil b im god (same producer clams casino)

lil bs wack..dont ever put your self in the same genre as him..your better than that g..

Said of beattips.com used call my beats elevator music.
he said my drums where too hard for my soft melodies while i felt like it was totally dope.

i personally like mellow beats with hard drums.

No offense, but I'm not hearing anything "new", it's just hip hop over a mellow beat. Tribe did this forever. Wiz does it now. Lupe, Kanye, Nas has a few, what about stuff like this?

Or are the beats supposed to be more Ethereal?

I've produced for a few of the artists mentioned here and I think cloud rap is a BS label. Blogs love these trendy genre names but really what ties these rappers together is just sounding different than what you're used to. I like working with Main Attrakionz because I feel like I can make my beats as weird as I want them to be instead of trying to copy a radio sound.
