As a music producer, what's the benefit of joining ASCAP or BMI and what is the function of that versus just copyrighting your music with the copyright office?

There's loads to learn and it's best to work your way up as it takes time for people to recognise your are there first time round.

If you want to run a record label, go find someone who runs one and pick their brain, be their friend and suck them dry for info. In kind they will actually reward you by including you in things, such as night, opportunities and promo.

If you want to be a publisher go make a friend in publishing. There is so much social stuff going on inside, you can't expect to be part of any of the music industry unless you have someone to vouch for you and recommend you.

You can't do it all alone it take two, just like babies!

If you are gonna think about being a publisher you should really think about being published first to understand it. You can get 100,000 pretty easy if you are in the charts for the publishing rights to your music for a year or so. There is so much cash out there if you know the right people.

Ascap and BMI payout publishing in the US for performances and licensing. So you would be receiving checks from ASCAP or BMI to your publishing company depending on how many spins on the radio, plays in the clubs, etc. ASCAP and BMI, to my knowledge do not copyright material for people, but when you register a song with ASCAP or BMI you will need to tell them how the copyright ownership is split.

An other issue that i didn't see mentioned with publishing is administration of publishing rights. I've never experienced ASCAP or BMI paying all of the parties to a song; they usually pay the administrator, whoever you've designated as administrator, and the administrator pays to all of the parties involved.
