Starting a digital download website

I am interested in starting a website to sell digital downloads of albums of artist in my area. Many of these artist record cover material and most quite possibly do not have any mechanical licenses for their recordings.
So my question is, could I be held liable for digitally distributing recordings for artist/indie labels that do not hold a mechanical license?
