Questions about ISRC codes

So i have just finished my first album and have been doing research on distributing and marketing. i came across information on needing ISRC codes but had already sent my Master CDR to manufacturing. My question is: Must the codes be embedded at the mastering stage?. or is it possible to have code for my songs after i have already had my album pressed?. possibly in a word document of some kind?. what is your experience with these matters?

need to be part of the mastering process - it is how you distinguish your song title of the same name as someone else's with the exact same name in the digital world of distribution and via playback of the cd on air - i.e. it is how you ensure that any automatic reporting credits your song for the purposes of mechanical reproduction rights amongst other uses
