Question bout mixtapes

Ok I read this really long thread from back in 06 or something bout how producers were complaining they don't get paid from mixtapes and it's a waste of a beat. Why don't just give him the beat free for PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY... I dont understand am I missing something here?
 
Mixtapes are for promotional purposes, so yes give it away for promotional purposes. You can't expect somebody to buy tracks from an unknown artist they've never heard of.

"Who cares about your mixtape I don't know you."

That's what is in the mind of EVERY consumer. It's your job as an artist to give them a reason to care, and the way you go about doing that is all about your marketing approach.
