Question about Co-Producing for a Major Label?

I co-produced a song with this cat, I had the beat originally, then he sent over a beat, I took parts from his beat and added to mine and finished it and got it placed with a well know rapper, The thing is, he's signed to a production company & the production company is saying that "He PRODUCED THE BEAT" and we co-produced and everything should go through him. Can the artist still put the song out even if we haven't agreed on terms yet? Or will this hold up anything?

main question is why wasn't terms down in writing before hand...

Im pretty sure it wont hold up the artist and what their tryin to do....
But ur not a psychic... u didnt kow the song would be placed...
-u was doing ur art...
But just like tone said... u always need to think business just n case....
