Fair Deal?

Before I ask my music business teacher I wanted to ask FP.

I'm a producer, record engineer, and artist. Right now I have a long list of what I'd like to call "hobby" rappers. Guys who aren't necessarily bad, but aren't driven enough to make the sacrifices to take their music to the next level (in terms of investing time/money). I DON'T WANT to own a label. I don't want any artist. I want to be in the song business.

I have sent in my BMI forms to be affiliated as a music publishing company (still waiting on the results) and I'll be filing in my DBA forms as soon as I get confirmation.

So since I'll be the producer (or melody-writer) and publisher, I'd want 75% of the overall publishing. Also, since I'll be financing the recording and mixing of these songs, I'd want to own the master recording also. I will be doing all the legwork in exploiting/pushing these records.

I'm just wondering if this even makes sense? Are single-song "deals" even normal? I don't want to control these artists. Just the songs I do with them.
