It depends on the terms that come with the free beat. Some don't mind if you make a profit and other's do. So, pay attention to the terms.

Is it free as in, its free to download and use for auditioning purposes? or is it free to record on and use for profit? some people offer free downloads so you can audition and see if your able to come up with something you'd like but then you have to purchase a lease if you wanted to actually use it. Other people offer free downloads knowing that people will record over it and they might get exposure because it has their beat tag on it but they may want you to lease it. If they don't say you can't use it, then use it, but the easiest way to find out is to ask the person who produced it.
