ASCAP Royalties on beats

Ok, so I’ve learned that when I get a placement I get royalties from the label. But what about ASCAP? How can I claim performance royalties on a song with my beat in it? I’ve already signed up with ASCAP as a publisher and writer so now what.

Record royalties will depend on the type of deal you make.

Performance royalties from ASCAP or BMI will be based on airplay, if you are credited as a composer. But if you fill out clearance forms for your compositions, then submit them to other artists/publishers/labels in an attempt to get placements? Probably better to just make sure that your copyright paperwork is in-order, and wait to see what comes up as possible deals. What most people don't seem to understand is that once your beat has lyrics added and a recording is made, that song becomes one piece of music that is corporately owned (equal shares to music and lyric writer, in the absence of an agreement to the contrary). So it makes sense to wait on filling clearance forms until you know if you have placements or not...
