I keep getting a warning tonight about unsafe active x controls on the site, so pages can't be displayed properly.

Has anything changed recentley or has my computer just gone wrong. In any case any advice on how to get rid of it.

    It's not terminal, just annoying:mad:

go to "start - run" and enter "dxdiag"

then check what version of directx you have installed (in the main window close to the bottom)

also try windows-update (if you don't have an updated windows)
    cheers

make SURE you keep your windows updated, and run an anti-virus often

Also - you may have changed your security settings. Set them to the defaults (under Tools > Internet Options)

the first part should be as common as an "amen" in a prayer..

especially nowadays a good anti-virus and keeping the operating system up to date is the most important thing when surfing the web..

also a personal advice: there are programs called ad-aware (by lavasoft) or spybot s&d (search & destroy).. they check your computer for dialer, tracking cookies and other unwanted registry entries/files/spyware and erase them..

i just set up win2k new last week, and after installing all my software, ad-aware found approx 20 possibly threadful events.. (which doesn't mean, that they're definitely threadful)

    cheers

as aware is an excellent tool, and there's a free version as well as a professional version.

Another great tool is AVG if you want a free virus scanner. There is also a paid version which gives a few more options.

Believe me, I am usually careful with which sites I visit but today I had about 4 spyware utilities installed from one site. And no, I am not exagerating.

I'm pretty much sure it was either the update to java virtual machine i installed or the GATOR:mad: adserver software which i have deleted now.

Is there any easy way to get rid of/block gator:mad: and its ilk?

Don't worry, I got your pm asking for links, I'll get back to you.

Olsat, get ad aware. I misspelled it in my post, but that should take care of Gain/Gator.
