Reverb has to be a send? Different rooms?

Am I right in thinking that reverb should be used as a send effect. And on a track you should probably only have two or three different reverbs all sent in different amounts to different channels?

Also what are the best different rooms to use? I mean should I set one up for a big cathedral type space and route pads and atmospheres to that, and one small room and use that for drums?

I usually use reverbs as a send because its less cpu and you can apply some amount of the same to the individual tracks. Every situation varies so I wouldnt be able to tell you specifics, but think of it as panning from front to back.

These are all good starting points, but by no means absolute rules. It always depends on what you're going for, instead of following some kind of a template.

Ultimately, you should aim for two or three sends plus a master room reverb for the whole track, so that in the finished mix, everything seems to be located in the same space.

Or you can choose not to create an environmental cues setup (the above suggestion) as a creative decision.

i prefer to use reverb on individual tracks as i tend to vary reverb amounts between sounds, however for things like hats shakers etc i would group to a send and process them all together since its easier for me.

Agreed with what's been said, another reason for putting it on the instrument bus itself is to put a compressor after the reverb which can give you some nice results.

Personally I do just that + use about 3 reverbs as sends, one long, one short with low freqs cutoff and another short with fuller sound.. that's just in general though, all mixes are different.
