    Favorite Synths to program?

What are some of your favorite synths to program yourself from scratch?

I've been a preset whore all my life lol. As of recently, I grabbed a very nice Novation SL mkii keyboard w/ a plethora of nice controls, and it's got me assigning the knobs to parameters and programming synths now. I never was a fan of using a mouse to turn software knobs... too tedious a task for me. But now w/ this board, programming synths is waaayyy easier to do.

My current favorite synth to program from scratch is Albino. I feel like i've spend enough time on it to understand what's going on in the interface.

What synths do you guys use to make your own sounds from scratch?

I knew this was about software, but well...that's what I like to use (it's a Nord Lead 3, and the image is dark because it's taken in total darkness ). Software control surfaces have come a long way, but there's nothing quite like the immediacy of a well knobby hardware unit, and the NL3's interface is about the best I've ever used.

I haven't had the pleasure of using synth hardware yet. Eventually I'd like to. My only question with it is are you able to save presets someway on analog gear? I'd imagine you could do it for the digital synths.. but i don't see how u could do it on gear that's not digital based. Can you do it on your Nord Lead?

If so... that puts a hardware synth in my gear list by 2014 lol.

Patch memory hasn't got anything to do with the synth being analog or digital...it's been around for over 30 years now, the first ones being the Oberheim Four-Voice & Prophet 5. Of course the knobs don't turn to the right position by magic, so it pretty much comes down to the value pickup method - what happens when you change something after recalling a patch: does it jump straight to the knob value, does it scale the difference, does it only pick up when you move past the stored value etc.

The NL3 is a pretty modern VA with a comprehensive MIDI implementation, and naturally, patch memory. But take a look at the Mopho, or the Moog Voyager, or the Andromeda A6 - all very much analog, all modern, all have patch memory (with, of course, the exception of the Voyager Old School, which ditches just that).
