Reason, Cubase, Reaper, Studio One, Logik, all depends on what works for you and what you consider cheap.

Some vst's come as standalone running program for mac or windows, search up on some on which style you might like.

    I'd go with Reason.

If you want some insider info by some big name that uses Reason the same way as you'd be using it, check this vid:

The 3 different synthesizers in Reason, the combinator and all the other instruments in Reason makes it such an all round generator of sounds you can control with a midi controller keyboard. Reason 6 ain't that expensive either.
I just wouldn't wanna use anything else tbh.

What are the specs of your netbook? Does it have an Atom processor?
I saw a girl texting & driving the other day & it really made me mad, so I rolled down my window & threw my whiskey flask at her.

The beauty of Reason in that is that it runs on practically every notebook out there, and reliable as well!

There is a difference between a netbook and a notebook.

I misread netbook for notebook idd. Point still remains that Reason is about one of the DAWs out there the least heavy on your cpu. So if it would be able to handle a DAW, it should be Reason.
What intel core? 2 Gb of ram ain't that much.
I'd say download their demo and see if you can get it to work properly. Make sure to tweak the settings like taking the cpu restriction off and adjusting your sample amount and sample rate to get the least amount of latency. Also get asio drivers for your A/I or asio4all drivers. Other than that, minimizing your instruments and turning off cable animations and such saves on cpu as well. Anyway, that netbook might be something you'd really want to upgrade to a notebook.
