well i just got cubase sx2 and the vst's dont even cause a problem now because of the freeze fuction...once ur dont wiht a vst u just freeze the application and it turns the vst into an audio file so it frees up space...cant get any better than that

and if u want u can always unfreeze and change it

the specs of the computer are important, as well as how many and which vst's you use.. of course some need more resources than others

It requires more system resources just to open Cubase and do nothing but look at it than it does to open up FL Studio, load up Battery, fill it up with 50 drum parts, fill up the piano roll with notes, hit play and let it loop while playing more notes on your midi keyboard. You getting the picture. FL Studio is as low as you can expect on resources. If that's not enough, you need a faster machine.

Its the VSTis themselves that take up the processing power

Of course it is, that's the point. Cubase is a host which takes more resources just to open itself up than another host, FL Studio, requires to actually open up and run a few VSTis. If you're gonna use VSTs and you have a machine which is fairly low spec'd, then Cubase won't be ideal to run some of these VSTi synths. FL is about as good as it gets.
