    Logic 8 EXS Directory

I have a gang of EXS instruments, that I would like to load up when I select open instruments in the EXS24 sampler, or else I have to find the file which is fairly inconvenient.

any body have any idea what the directory is for EXS instruments? I have googled it, and searched for files in spotlight but I just cant seem to find the right spot.

    Thanks in advance

You can really put them anywhere, then use the Project Manager in Logic to locate them and add them to it's database so that Logic/EXS24 will remember where they are. You can probably also look in the Project Manager and see exactly where EXS is currently looking for samples and get the directory from there. I would advise you to make a separate directory for your own custom samples apart from the ones that Logic installs itself.

If you're trying to do a search with spotlight and you're using Leopard, then yeah you're probably not finding things. Spotlight search in Leopard is simply broken and apple hasn't decided to fix it yet. It worked great in Tiger, doesn't work in Leopard. It seems that Leopard/Spotlight just doesn't search in every directory.

Thanks for that info, what do you mean add it to the database?

I have alll my instrument files there located in the project manager, you can't drag them into EXS or anything like that.

Let me see. I'm going a little from memory here. So you have a bunch of exs instruments and the samples that go along with them. You put the instruments in the directory where Logic's other instruments are, but you can put them in a different folder. When you open up the EXS24 sampler, you'll be able to see those instruments, however, EXS24 won't know where the samples are and that can cause catastrophic problems when working in your live projects and an instrument's samples comes up missing. So you go into the Project Manager and point Logic to the location of the samples that go with your new instruments. It doesn't matter where they are, Logic just needs to see them and record their location. Having said all that, I've found Logic's Project Manager to be completely unintuitive and I've never fully understood it, and my results have always been hit and miss. I can tell you this though. If you ever have a situation where you're working on a project and you go to load an EXS instrument and the samples come up missing, Logic can go into a "searching for the sample" mode with no way to quit it except to force quit Logic and kill your project and lose all your work. So, break out your manual, and hopefully you'll do better at understanding the Project Manager than I have. Point the Project Manager to your samples and test them all to see if it worked. My mileage with this process, even with Logic's own samples/instruments that install with Logic, has been very poor.

I thought they removed the project manager in logic 8? those files are located in your home folder-library-application supprot-logic I think. You should have a folder in there for your exs instruments, and a seperate folder for your exs samples, which are the actual notes. If you want to place these sample files in another place you can get exs manager from redmatica. It will link your sample folder to logic from wherever you put it

The Project Manager is still there in Logic Pro 8. Redmatica is fine too I'm sure but seems overkill just to do this.

thats true it may be overkill but it came with my bundle, I really just wanted autosampler and ended up purchasing the whole bundle, but anyway where is the project manager? Someone said on the logic forums on another site that it had been removed from logic 8.

My bad, I'm mistaken. The "browser" has indeed replaced the Project Manager. As far as the EXS sampler's samples are concerned, you set a preference in the samplers preference to look in local drives, or all drives etc. It should be able to find the samples that way. So, apparently you still need to put the instrument files in the specific area where EXS sampler expects to find them, and the samples will be found because the preference in Logic can be set to search all local drives. As much as the Project Manager didn't work correctly, this seems like a step back. That search can take a very long time and can happen in the middle of a project. I haven't used Logic or my Mac in a while. I didn't even realize that Studio 8 didn't have the usual project manager anymore.

Thanls alot for the info guys, I really couldn't get the instruments to come up in the browser so I just realised I could save the state of the instrument, much easier I guess.

    Thanks again.
