I'm guessing you can hook up a sampler to the XL-7.
But only to play the sounds you have loaded in the sampler. What the product description means is that you can add additional sounds via a rom card. A rom card holds sounds from other modules, such as the Mo-phatt, or the Orbit. To answer your last question, as long as the sampler can be controlled via midi, the sequencer will work with it.
